Educational Background
Dr. Dwight Silvera completed his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology
at the University of Waterloo, graduating on the dean’s list.
After completing his medical degree at McMaster University in
Hamilton, Ontario, Dr. Silvera did his specialization in
ophthalmology at Queen’s University in Kingston, where he
served as chief resident. Following this, he earned a post-doctoral
fellowship in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at
the University of Iowa.
Refractive Experience
Dr. Silvera has diverse experience performing laser surgery, and is
proficient in several types of state-of-the-art lasers, including
the VISX Star S4, Bausch & Lomb Z100, Allegretto Wavelight, and
is certified for the IntraLase laser. He was one of the first
surgeons to perform an IntraLase-enabled keratoplasty (cornea
transplant) in Iowa. During his fellowship at the University of
Iowa, Dr. Silvera taught ophthalmology to residents and medical
students. As a Corneal Specialist, Dr. Silvera also offers a new
treatment for Keratoconus patients called corneal
cross-linking.
Accomplishments and Awards
Dr. Silvera is board-certified in Canada with the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and certified in the United
States with the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has
participated in various research projects and has written articles
for scientific publications, including the Canadian Journal of
Ophthalmology. He has also given presentations at various events
and major ophthalmology conferences, such as the Association for
Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Academy of
Ophthalmology. Dr. Silvera finished in the 99th percentile of
his OKAP (Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program) exam across
North America and has received numerous awards in recognition of
his accomplishments.
